Wednesday Night Bible Class for March 2007

Romans 1:16 – "For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek." Next month there will be a course on the Theology and Practice of Evangelism offered in our Wednesday Night Bible Class (starting on 7th March, 7:30 – 9:30 pm at the Chinese Service Hall). If you haven’t attended any training on practical evangelism before, now is the time to get yourself equipped!

The four sessions of this course are designed to equip participants with biblical principles of evangelism, as well as tools and methods of evangelism which can be used at home, at school or workplace and in outdoor witnessing situations.

There will be a lesson on handling frequently-asked questions and excuses, and opportunities will be provided to practice in class, and also in an outdoor session. May the Lord help us to be "ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you." (1 Peter 3:15) The following are some testimonies from those who have taken the course:

I HAVE personally benefited from this course. The various methods of evangelism and the practical lessons conducted gave me the confidence to witness to my relatives, friends and colleagues with or without Gospel tracts any time and anywhere.

Evangelism is not just for the church leaders only but for every Christian. In Mark 5:7 Jesus called the 12 disciples and sent them out two by two and in Luke 10:1, Jesus appointed 70 believers and sent them out two by two to every cities and places to evangelize. Therefore, as Christians, it is also our duty to evangelize. – Lee Him Buan

I LEARNED a few memory verses during the evangelism course and have found them to be very useful. I was on the plane to Penang. A Chinese man was sitting beside me; just the two of us. I took the opportunity to break the ice and struck a conversation with him. We discussed about the war and the fighting in the Middle East.

Finally, I asked him what he knows about Christianity. I shared with him about man’s sin (Romans 3:23) and about God’s love (Romans 5:8) and the promised Messiah Jesus Christ (John 3:16). I reminded him of the judgment after death (Hebrews 9:17). His objection was that there were white, black, patched and other coloured cows but they produce the same white milk meaning that all religions are the same.

The plane landed and although the man did not profess Jesus Christ as Saviour, I knew the Gospel was shared and the Holy Spirit will work in his heart. That is my job: to share the Gospel. May the Lord have mercy upon the lost soul. – Ong Beng Hong

THANK THE LORD for the PowerPoint illustration of the "Bridge of Life." I had the opportunities to use and show it to business friends and colleagues, Christians and non-Christians. So far three of them had asked for a copy, pray that it will not only bless them personally in the understanding of the Gospel, but also they will use it to illustrate to other non-believing friends and relatives. I have also emailed it to more than 10 overseas relatives most of them of other faith, though none have responded, but I believe they must have viewed it and perhaps the illustration may be a talking point when I next see or visit them. – Tan Thiam Hong

THANK GOD for the opportunity to attend the lessons on Practical Evangelism. Through the lessons, I have learned many things, which I am not aware of. We were taught on how to use different Gospel tracts for different situations, how to use the "Bridge of Life" illustration to explained God’s love and salvation and how to evangelize to people of different races, cultures and religions. I also enjoyed the practical lesson and through it, I have gained more confidence in sharing the Gospel. We also memorized some Bible verses so that we can apply it when we share the "Bridge of Life" illustration.

The Bible tells us that as Christians we should share the Gospel with non-believers. In order for us to share the Gospel, we need to equip ourselves with some knowledge on God’s Word. I have truly learned a lot from all the lessons and pray that God will grant me the wisdom and courage to share the Gospel with my friends, colleagues and loved ones. – Michael Sim

THESE practical evangelism classes by Rev Charles Seet have taught me many valuable lessons. Firstly, evangelism is not a spiritual gift but a spiritual discipline. I used to excuse myself for not having the gift of the gab, as I am not an outspoken person.

But after a few practical (hands-on) lessons, I began to realise that it is not that difficult after all. Praise the Lord for this! The "Bridge of Life" method of sharing the Gospel is very handy when we do not have a tract with us. The memory verses also help but most of all it is God’s help to overcome the fear of evangelism.

I have started to reach out to my colleagues both in Singapore and abroad as I travel on business trips frequently. For example, I would ask my colleague in Hong Kong to bring me to a Christian bookshop and find opportunity to share God’s Word. When a colleague asks me about a topic to blog, I said, "Armageddon", and then share after biblical end-times. We need to take the first step and God will do the rest. All praise and glory to His name! – Desmond Chow

THIS SHORT COURSE is most appropriate and timely. Although we may not use it immediately, we know that we are prepared to give an answer, i.e. to evangelise, whenever we have the opportunity to do so. The course is indeed practical and one learns of the different approaches to evangelism and how to overcome some of the questions a "prospect" may ask. It also provides us with the knowledge that evangelism is not just confined to a moment’s sharing but also the follow-up that is critical to ensure that a complete evangelism is properly conducted. It is my belief that every born again Christian should undertake such a course so that we may, as individuals, do our part to fulfill the great commission. – Ong Cheng Sng

PRACTICAL EVANGELISM is about evangelistic outreach principles that teach, direct and enlighten us to conduct personal evangelism for non-believers. This course enables us to share the Gospel with many other unsaved ones.

I used to go tracting to witness for Christ during my younger days. As I grew older, my witnessing for Christ decreased, and sometimes sharing the Gospel was a daunting task. But thank God that this course has revived my spirit of evangelism and made witnessing for Christ so simple and easy-to-learn.

I have benefited much from learning to use the "Bridge of Life" illustration. I am reminded to memorize Bible verses to assist us for sharing and edification. It is a blessing to share Christ to our non-Christian friends. – Lee Chee Weng

I AM BLESSED to have attended the Practical Evangelism class conducted by Rev Charles Seet. The sessions have taught me how to use God’s Word and the Gospel and the power of the Holy Spirit to convince a lost person. The resources provided in the class like the Inquirer’s Bible Course and the Gospel Tracts will help me feel more confident now than ever before on how I could start to do evangelism. I will use what I have learnt to start off to share the Gospel with my Dad first and then my Mum, although both are Chinese educated and Hokkien speaking. I will use the Gospel tract in Chinese together with the "Bridge of Life" to share the Gospel with them. I pray that God will help me and help my parents as I share the Gospel with them. – Teo Kian Guan

THANK YOU for conducting the ‘Practical Evangelism’ course for us. I find the lessons to be objective and organized. It added to my confidence to meet evangelism opportunities. You were always the first person in class and most prepared for the lessons, delivering it lively and lovingly. That was motivating and your lessons were easy to follow. The required exercises reinforced the lessons. This is an essential and practical course on evangelism. – Herbert Gwee

I LEARNT a number of methods of witnessing to others. I like the systematic way of making the Gospel known. The method I like best is the "Bridge of Life" Illustration. Knowing what to say gives me more confidence to go forth to make the Gospel known. – Lim Gaik Lee

I AM TRULY BLESSED by the training sessions. The authentic Gospel is clearly taught. I learnt some verses that I can also use during witnessing. I will learn to witness more effectively in dialects when I have received the Gospel Toolkit CD-ROM. – Ong Chuay Ying

I FEEL more confident and equipped in presenting the Gospel especially using the "Bridge of Life" Illustration. I was also encouraged by the testimonies shared by those who have been evangelizing. – Susan Yee

A STRUCTURED PROGRAMMED like this is certainly better than hearing bits and pieces from various source. It has given me better confidence in sharing the Gospel. – Kenny Wee

VERY INFORMATIVE, very practical and systematic. Builds up confidence to speak to others about the Gospel. – Wendy Lun

Stories on Soul-winning

ONE DAY, as Felix Neff, the Swiss Reformer, was walking in a street in the city of Lausanne, he saw at a distance a man whom he took for one of his friends. He ran behind him, tapped him on the shoulder before looking him in the face, and asked him. "What is the state of your soul, my friend?" The stranger turned. Neff perceived his error, apologized and went his way. Some three or four years after, a man came indebted to him for a great kindness. Neff did not recognize him, and begged him to explain. The stranger replied, "Have you forgotten an unknown person, whose shoulder you touched in the street in Lausanne, asking him, "What is the state of your soul?" It was I. Your question led me to serious reflection. Now I find it is well with my soul." – Encyclopedia of 7,700 Illustrations

AT NO. 10 DOWNING STREET, London, early one morning, a timid knock called William Gladstone from the writing of an important speech he was to deliver that day in Parliament. Standing at the door was a boy. Mr Gladstone had won the friendship and confidence of the boy by little deeds of kindness. Said the boy, "Mr Gladstone, my brother is dying. Won’t you please come and show him the way to heaven?" Leaving his own important work for the most important work any Christian can do, Gladstone soon arrived at the bedside of the dying boy. In a matter of moments, the little fellow was rejoicing in his newly found Saviour! Returning to his office, Gladstone wrote at the bottom of the speech he was preparing, "I am the happiest man in London, England, today!" – Walter B. Knight
