Welcome to our Adult Sunday School Classes!

Introduction

Many Christians despite attempting to read the bible, found it difficult to understand the Bible at the first reading. So, what is the secret to successful Bible learning? In Jeremiah 29:12-13, God’s Word says “Then shall ye call upon me, and ye shall go and pray unto me, and I will hearken unto you. And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart.” The faithful Apostle James says, “If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.” (James 1:5) And our Lord and Saviour urging His flock, “Hitherto have ye asked nothing in my name: ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be full.” (John16:24

A Faithful Example

Ezra 7:10: “For Ezra had prepared his heart to seek the law of the LORD, and to do it, and to teach in Israel statutes and judgments.”

Quality of a Good Student

Ezra is a faithful servant of God and he is an excellent example for us to follow. Despite the fact that he was well versed in the law and statutes of God Almighty, Ezra applied his heart to keenly learn God’s Word. There are three virtues that we can pursue in learning God’s precious truth.

a.                  It demands resolute determination

“For Ezra had prepared his heart to seek the law of the LORD…”

Ezra purposed in his heart and his purpose was set on searching and knowing the Word of God. In fact, Ezra 7:6 said that Ezra was well versed in the Law of Moses which the God of Israel had given. Here is a man who despite knowing the Word of God well, was not content with all the knowledge that he possessed, but gave himself wholly to diligently study God’s Word to know it better.

b.                 It demands complete dedication

“… and to do it …”

Many of us are as what 2 Tim. 3:7 said: “Ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth.” But we are exhorted to ”Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.” (2 Tim 2:15)

Ezra’s heart was set on obeying the Word of God. Not only did he know the Word of God, he was a doer of the Word of God. James 1:22: “But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.” He was readily obedient in practicing God’s Word. As with the Psalmist, “But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.” (Ps. 1:2) This is what God commanded Joshua 1:8: “This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.”

c.                  It demands faithful propagation

“… to teach in Israel statutes and judgments.”

Ezra is also a teacher of the law in v11, 12 and 21. His heart was set on teaching the Word of God. In Ezra 7:25, King of Persia Artaxerxes said: “And thou, Ezra, after the wisdom of thy God, that is in thine hand, set magistrates and judges, which may judge all the people that are beyond the river, all such as know the laws of thy God; and teach ye them that know them not.”

After learning, we are supposed to teach: “And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also.” (2 Tim 2:2) Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ commands:-“Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen.” (Matt. 28:19-20) Jesus said,He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.” (Jn. 14:21)

Conclusion

Like Ezra, as Christians we want to love God and glorify His Holy Name. As the moon reflects the light of the sun, let our little Christian lives so shine, testifying and reflecting the Light of the world. May God help each us to consecrate our time to study His Words, know His will and DO His bidding.
